GEOGRAPHIC POSITION

The municipality of Menges extends over an area of 22.45 km2. It lies in the Subalpine Plain of the Kamnik Alps 15 km northeast of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. From the center of Slovenia (GEOSS), Menges is only 17 km of air distance. It has a pleasant and beautiful location, which has always attracted settlers. The municipality covers the towns of Menges, Loka pri Mengsu and Topole, which lie on the plain (more than half of the municipality) and the village Dobeno, which is located in the hills and rises the highest on the Debel vrh above Dobeno, at a height of 594 m above sea level. Directly above Menges, hill Gobavica climbs to an altitude of 435 m above sea level. Creek Psata flows through the municipality of Menges towards Loka. There is also a channelized stream bed eastward to Kamniska Bistrica river. In the north-west, the Julian Alps, Karavanke and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps form the beautiful background and the Mengesko polje plain extends in the south-east.

POPULATION AND SHARE OF YOUNG PEOPLE

According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, 7,976 inhabitants lived in the Municipality of Menges on 1 July 2018. 14.6% (1,165) were young people aged 15 to 29. Compared to 2017, when in the Municipality of Menges were 1,196 young people in this age group, the number of young people decreased by 0,57%.

LOCAL INDUSTRIES PROVIDING EMPLOYMENT

In the Municipality of Menges there is a developed textile industry (FILC company), pharmaceutical industry (LEK company with more than 900 employees), construction, auto mechanics, transport, trade (Mercator, Tus, etc.) service activities. Employment is also possible in tourism, farm tourism, catering and public institutions in the field of health, education, pharmacy, the library and in the public utilities, which are responsible for the waste and processing of municipal waste, public lighting, water purification and road maintenance.

POSITIVE TRENDS

Young families migrate to Menges (2011 - 1995, 2015 - 2065, 2018 - 2157), the rate is has been rising steadily, therefore the reconstruction and infrastructure renewal (plans for a new traffic connection) are being prepared. Average gross wage per capita has also increased (in 2014 - 1366.81 €, in 2015 - 1,417.71 €, in 2016 - 1427.92 €, in 2017 - 1390.76 €, in 2018 - 1485.73 €).

NEGATIVE TRENDS

Regardless of young families who have settled in the municipality, the number of young people aged 18 to 29 is decreasing because they emigrate from the municipality (in 2008 - 1,223 people aged 18 to 29, in 2010 - 1,192, in 2012 - 1,124, in 2014 - 1,060, in 2016 - 975, in 2018 - 939). Population is aging, negative natural population growth is recorded.
